چکیده

PURPOSE. The migration, proliferation, differentiation, and adhesion of cells and other cellular functions are influenced by the surrounding extracellular matrix, in normal and wound-healing conditions. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of enzymes that degrade and remodel the extracellular matrix and, thus, play a central role in the wound-healing process. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy GVR), a wound-healing process in the retina, is a major cause of the failure of retinal detachment surgery. The role of MMPs in the pathobiology of PVR is unknown. We have investigated the presence of MMPs in the vitreous of patients with retinal detachment and the predictive value of MMPs for the future development of PVR.

Surgery as the primary management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy: a history reflecting my experiences and biases.

Although attempts were made ot reattach retinas using proliferative vitreoretinopathy by various techniques before the 1970s, it was the development and subsequent refinement of closed-eye, mechanized pars plana vitrectomy that initiated the rapid rise in the surgical success rate. This article presents a personal history of the milestone accomplishments that facilitated the strong possibility ...

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) associated with infantile osteoporosis: case report.

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is an inherited blinding condition characterized by abnormal development of the retinal vasculature. The authors describe a rare case of the disease associated with severe infantile osteoporosis in a young female patient. The patient was submitted to multiple vitreoretinal procedures in both eyes due to tractional macular detachments. The case was com...

Proliferative retinal diseases: myofibroblasts cause chronic vitreoretinal traction.

Myofibroblasts are contractile cells having features intermediate between those of the fibroblast and smooth muscle. Myofibroblasts in preretinal membranes may cause retinal traction in proliferative retinal diseases. In this study, we demonstrate the presence of a chronically contractile subpopulation of myofibroblasts in pre-retinal membranes. Apha smooth muscle actin or desmin, both markers ...

Macrophages in proliferative vitreoretinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy: differentiation of subpopulations.

Macrophages have long been known to play a major role in the pathogenesis of proliferative vitreoretinal disorders. Using the monoclonal antibodies EBM11 (pan macrophage), 27E10 (early inflammatory stage marker), and RM3/1 (healing phase marker), different subpopulations of macrophages were differentiated in surgically removed membranes from patients with macular pucker (n = 6), proliferative v...
